INTERIOR DESIGN
Sebastian Navejar - 2020
I’ve always loved creativity in any kind of form: music production, art, fashion, or any possible way to create. I would write lyrics for fun to beats I found on youtube or would think of different ways to express myself through fashion. I tried to create my own music during creativity week. Yet, I never had the resources or opportunities to fully express myself through those art forms. Not until I stumbled upon Interior Design. Before my 16th birthday my room was as simple as could be, only the bare essentials: plastic drawers and a bed. Then I turned 16, got a job, and had some income to play with. So I watched interior design videos on YouTube trying to figure out how I would design my room. Once I started getting creative pieces and mixing colors with textures and textures with furniture, I realized I liked interior design. Then the opportunity came to follow this hobby with my senior project.
I chose Interior Design because I knew I wouldn’t get bored with it. I had enough passion and motivation to make the project last for 2 years. The most interesting thing about it, is that it has scientific effects on the human mind. So, not only is interior design an art form, but also a type of psychological science. I learned this while studying academic databases for the research portion of my project. The colors chosen cause a person to feel a certain mood or can influence their actions. For example, the color yellow is an excellent color to have in a dining room or kitchen as it causes people to be more talkative and lively. This goes along with lights, textures, and spacing. Also, when you start combining these different interior design factors they give off different effects. Such as red paint with vibrant white lights creates a sense of intensity and fun in a room, while the same red with more yellowish dim lights can give an effect of intimacy.
When it came to building my project, I had a hard time. My project has lived under the umbrella of Interior Design since the beginning, but the actual details of it have changed multiple times. At first I was planning on helping with the Chinquapin Student Center but that project was moving too fast for it to work alongside mine. Then, I was going to do personal spaces and classrooms for the teachers, but a certain teacher may not always work in one specific classroom, and teachers come and go. It wasn’t until I had a conference with Sarah that I stumbled upon the idea for my final project, redesigning the older restrooms on campus to better suit students. And so I went off to create what I thought would be an ideal restroom environment based off of my research, student feedback, and my creativity.
