Sex Education

Janae Flakes-2019

My Junior/Senior Project is composed of research from numerous peer-reviewed articles and interviews with professors of sex education. I took part in hands-on research at a program called Breakthrough Houston, where I learned how to teach and create lesson plans. I also wrote a ten page research paper on the broken sex education system and offered multiple solutions to solve this national dilemma. I have worked with the sex education department at my school in order to decide what is important and appropriate to teach each grade level and I have built my curriculum around those guidelines.

My project is composed of a four day comprehensive sex education unit. The lessons cover everything from STD/STIs to Contraception and Consent. These lessons are designed for grades 8-12. I also have a lesson plan designed to teach consent to children in grades 6 and below. My lesson plans are also inclusive of students who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. My lessons will be added to Chinquapin sex ed curriculum and will be taught year after year.

I decided to start studying sex education in the United States because of the environment I grew up in. My mother, and many other women who are close to me, became parents as teenagers. I also noticed the huge HIV/AIDS crisis that has impacted the black community. I realized that sex education was often overlooked and was not usually seen as a solution to problems having to do with teen pregnancy and STI/STD prevention. I decided to study the different forms of sex education and to create an inclusive curriculum in attempt to lower teen pregnancy and STD/STI rates in my community.
