Trash to Art
Jessica Gonzalez - 2019
Recently Climate Change has become more realistic since more threatening storms have occurred. As a result, I decided to do my research paper on how environmental waste poses a threat to humanity. The heavy loads of pollution currently being dumped around the world are creating a toxic environment that eventually will not be sustainable for humans to live in. One of the simplest ways that people contribute to global warming is through littering. Thus I related my project to the effects of littering on global warming.
Many people today aren't aware of the huge contribution that littering is to climate change. Thus, for my project I wanted to raise awareness for the impacts of littering. I decided to make an art piece composed of trash that I would pick up in Buffalo Bayou Park, which is a heavily littered park in Houston. My piece is representative of Mother Earth as she hold the world, which is burning. I spent most my weekends during junior year going to the park and collecting trash. After I collected a sufficient amount of trash I began brainstorming ideas of what I wanted my art piece to look like and after much thought I chose to make a three-dimensional art piece of Mother Earth. I have hung it in the girl's dorm because it is one of the most prominent places in Chinquapin and this way it sure will be seen.
My name is Jessica Gonzalez and I am a senior at Chinquapin Preparatory. When Hurricane Harvey hit and it was named one of the worst floods to occur in over 100 years, I realized climate change was a threat and I wanted to help reduce the impacts. At the same time, I wanted my project to be something artistic that I would be passionate about. That's why I chose to make a trash sculpture because it would consist of me raising awareness for global warming, being artistic, and also reducing the amount of trash in buffalo bayou because thatś where I would be picking up trash.
